5 Photo Organising Tips for Computer Users

line

Photos taken by my phone and digital camera have really mounted up. It is so nice to quickly be able to share relevant pictures with family and friends. Autumn evenings are a good time to sort out the photos. Hopefully these tips based on my own experiences are useful timesavers for you.

Easily Organise Your Photos

Easily Organise Your Photos Start using Windows Photo Gallery which comes with Microsoft Windows. ‘Left Click’ your Windows Icon in the Bottom Left corner. Above the Search Box, left click to open the ‘All Programs’ folder and find the Windows Photo Gallery.

To make it quicker to open next time, ‘Right Click’, and from the drop down menu, select ‘Send to’ and from that dropdown menu select, Desktop ‘Create Shortcut’. Next time you can quickly open it by Double Clicking on the Icon that will now on your Screen Desktop.

Become familiar with using this software and if in the future you want to use a more sophisticated program, the way in which photo editing programs work will be familiar to you.

What I particularly like about the Windows Photo Gallery, is that it gives you the chance to easily make a Short Film of your photos adding music and titles etc. It also makes it easy to make a CD or DVD of your photos or films.

Find Quickly Your Photo Selections

Organising your photos with Windows Photo Gallery is easy. Rate your photos by stars. It will then be quick to find all your best five star photos. Rate your photos by tags.

A tag is a ‘category title’ that you decide on. You can set up as many tags as you wish. A tag could be ‘Celebrations’ or ‘ Lighthouses’ or ‘My Grandchildren’. Each photo can have as many tags as you wish.

Try to give each photo a name such as ‘Jenny & Pete, Easter Luncheon at No 19’. Windows Photo Gallery automatically notes information such as date taken, what taken with etc., just ‘Right Click’ on the photo and select ‘Properties’. Properties tells you detailed information about the photo.

Enhance & Edit Your Photos

Enhance & Edit Your PhotoWithin the Windows Photo Gallery, ‘Double Click’ the photo to be tidied up. It is a good idea to make a Copy of the Original Photo before you start to edit the photo. Select the ‘File’ icon on top and make a copy, you will be prompted to give the copy a name. Prefix the exiting name with ‘Original’, Save and it will be stored safely.

You can now select the ‘Fix’ icon on top You will be offered a range of easy options so you can, sharpen the image, tidy up the colours, the red eye, cut it to size etc.

So what do you do if you're at someone else's computer, and you need to quickly edit your photos, and there's no photo editing software on your friends computer for you to use? Go to Picknik.com and access photoediting tools through the web. You do not need to download any software into the computer. You can use it regardless of whether your photos are stored on a USB flash drive, a media card, Facebook, MySpace, Picasa or Photobucket.

Share Your Photos on the Web

Share Your Photos on the Web It is very popular to upload photos and videos to a place on the web for sharing. You can sometimes do the editing there as well. Popular websites include fotki.com, flickr.com, myphotobook.com, ovi.com, or galleryme.com.

Ultimately these websites make their money by printing photos. Photosharing websites are very useful when travelling and when family and friends are located around the world and can view your photos by computer or mobile phone. Remember though that by uploading your photos, that they are located elsewhere than your computer.

Email Your Photos Successfully

Email Your Photos SuccessfullyOpen the Windows Photo Gallery. Select the group of photos you wish to look at. You can select by date, by tag, by star rating etc. On the top right hand corner, to the left of the search box, is a 4 picture icon. ‘Left Click’ the drop down arrow and explore the selection options. You could sort your selection by the date taken for example.

To email one or several of these photos ‘Left Click’ to select a picture. If you want to select more, simultaneously press and hold the Control key, and continue to select additional photos by ‘Left Clicking’ on your mouse button.

Once your selection is made ‘Left Click’ the ‘Email’ icon at the top of the Windows Photo Gallery Screen. The picture size will default to ‘Medium’, and you will see the ‘Total Estimated Size’ of your photos to send. If you know that the person you are sending to have a slow internet connection or is on dial up or you are emailing to a phone, then you should reduce the picture file size. ‘Left Click’ on the drop down arrow and choose ‘Smaller’ or ‘Smallest’. Then click on ‘Attach’, and the Email Sending Form will open with your pictures attached.

All you need to do is fill in the subject line, so the receiver knows what they are receiving, and from whom. Then send your email with your photos safely attached.
